INTERVIEW WITH DESHRILL

(PRODUCER, VOICE ACTOR [Guybrush, Narrator, Bob, & LeChuck])

So, how did you come up with the idea to do a series of Radio Plays based on The Secret of Monkey Island games?

I got the idea from a few different sources... Over at the La Flava message boards, I had auditioned for a lot of radio plays based on anime and video games. I was sort of surprised that there wasn't really that many radio plays based on the classic LucasArts and Sierra adventure games, which are full of great characters, dialogue, and stories.

I had also been getting into sound editing and figured it wouldn't be too hard to edit together a radio play, so I used a script I found online of the dialogue from The Secret of Monkey Island game and decided to make two episodes of a Radio Play based on the game by myself.

How do you feel about the reaction from the Adventure Gamers message boards?

Really very flattered... I'm surprised at all the positive comments (it was my first try at mixing a radio play, after all) and just think it's great that Adventure Gamers has such a wonderful community of adventure game fans from around the world.

I was especially surprised that Jaws and Eriq decided to record their own attempts of doing a voice for LeChuck, both of which turned out much better than mine!

What was the most difficult part of the audio mixing so far?

Just balancing out the music and voices so one didn't overpower the other. I had listened to a few other fan radio plays and the music seemed to be mixed much higher than the dialogue, often drowning it out. Timing the different voice clips so it sounds like an actual conversation is tricky as well.

Any ideas for what's in store for the third episode?

It's going to be the scene where Guybrush walks into the Melee Bar to learn of the Three Trials. It will be challenging to mix the music and sound effects to give it a convincing illusion that these characters are in a crowded, pirate-filled bar.

Although the first two episodes weren't too time consuming to make, I knew that the third episode would be more complicated... I posted a poll on the Adventure Gamers forums to see if people wanted another episode, and enough people did, so that's why I'm making it! There is also a section on this site for Auditions if people want to try out for different parts.
